Importance of Sealing Solid Surface Countertops

Sealing the counter-top enhances the strength and protection that it already offers. It also improves the longevity of your counter-tops. Many solid surface counter-tops are sealed after duplication. However, regular monitoring of seals and resealing of your counter-tops are a must to, also, help your counter-tops' long-term existence and protection in the environment it is applied in.

Sealants are either cured epoxy, acrylic or polyester resin. These are synthetic materials used in a wide variety of applications. These come in clear solutions but can be mixed with color oil if desired. But the pros and cons of these resins will help you decide on what to settle with regards to kitchen or bathroom counter-top application.

Though most are resistant to damage from the types of acid found in wine, tomato products and other foods, these enhances the feature of being non-porous of the solid surface since these resins help prevent the growth of harmful minute living organisms.

Epoxies are used with hardener to seal solid surface counter-tops. However, epoxy resins deteriorates when exposed to ultraviolet rays. This gives limitations to being exposed in an outdoor application.

Acrylic resin for counter-tops is resistant to impact, staining, UV rays, scratches and heat. According to American Counter-top Fabricators, acrylic resin has the best stain resistance than any counter-top surface sealant.

Polyester resin on the other hand is more translucent, and less expensive than acrylic resin but not U.V. Stable thus it is advisable not to use on outdoor purposes. It also fades and becomes yellow overtime, is very brittle and more susceptible to breakage and chipping.

But never fret! There are simple ways to deal with this unwanted look on your solid surface. This troubling sight can surprisingly be sanded away and still look as new without removing the affected part!

Though anyone can clean away this scratch problem, you can contact your trusted technician to do it for you especially the major-to do work. However, if you decide to do it yourself, before doing everything else, assess the little damages on your counter top; all the scratches that has to be erased from the face of your counter top for one-time work.

Next thing on your to-do list is the cleaning of the surface with liquid soap and warm water. But if stains are stubborn, you can use a dirt solution of bicarbonate of soda and the amazing wonders of white vinegar (works all the time). Rinse it and dry with towel.

And the real job of polishing and wiping those untidy scratches from your sight! Just remember, no matter how extensive the damage, begin buffing lightly with the lowest grade of sandpaper then gradually increase the grit of your sandpaper. Be meticulous however, with scratches that become less visible.

After doing the job, damp away the resulting powder with a sponge to gather all tiny particles then wipe clean with dry towel for traces of water.

If your counter-top-reconditioning has affected the color, polish the surface to redress the color before sealing it because a solid surface usually comprises a coating to protect it from staining & make it more hard-wearing. If not indicated, you can use one that conforms to the room it is installed in.
